The Boston Celtics were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight season. They are a franchise on the rise but still must add one or two pieces before reaching serious contender status.
The Celtics will shop that No. 3 overall pick in the draft and scour the deep free agency pool. Their roster could look very different next season.
This is the Celtics’ ideal starting five for 2016-17.
5. Center — Jahlil Okafor
Getty ImagesMuch was made of Okafor's deficiencies on the defensive end and his atrocious advanced statistics, but it's worth speculating what he could do on a good team. The Sixers are under new management and have a logjam at center. Okafor could be moved.
4. Power Forward — Amir Johnson
Getty ImagesJohnson was one of the league's best free agent signings. His salary for 2016-17 is non-guaranteed but he'll be back after leading the Celtics in points produced per 100 possessions and becoming their best rim protector.
3. Small Forward — Jae Crowder
Getty ImagesAs important as Crowder's scoring and 3-point shooting are his real value exceeds the stats. He's the heart and soul of the Celtics and trading him, even if it's for Kevin Love, should be out of the question.
2. Shooting Guard — Nicolas Batum
Getty ImagesBatum would be a great addition for the Celtics. He will fix their 3-point shooting issue and fit in with their aggressive defense. Kent Bazemore is another option.
1. Point Guard — Isaiah Thomas
Getty ImagesThomas was incredible in a sixth man role for the Celtics in 2014-15 and didn't miss a beat when they asked him to move into the starting lineup this season. He led the team in scoring and assists and made his first All-Star appearance.
