Boston Celtics Make Horrible Decision Drafting Jaylen Brown

By Jacob Camenker

Well, it looks like the Boston Celtics were unable to get any of their trade offers to go through. All of their buzz about trying to acquire Jimmy Butler or Jahlil Okafor did not work out, so they elected to take a player at No. 3 overall who was vastly inferior to the other players that were available. Jaylen Brown from California was the pick at that slot and it was most certainly not a good decision by Celtics GM Danny Ainge.

To put it simply, Brown is merely a defensive specialist. At this time, he is nothing more. He has solid size at roughly 6-foot-6, and his wingspan will be a weapon on defense. However, he is a very bad offensive player and it will take him a long time to develop his shot.

In college, Brown did score 14.6 points per game, but he only shot 31 percent on jump shots. He was effective when driving to the rim, but in the NBA he may have trouble doing that. He has a decent frame, but if teams do not respect his jump shot, then he will not be able to drive into the lane. And also, the big men in the NBA will be much better than the ones he faced in college, so he is not going to be able to convert in the lane as much at the next level.

As a prospect, Brown reminds me a little bit of two players. The first is Stanley Johnson who was drafted by the Detroit Pistons last year. Johnson was mostly used as a defensive bench player last season, and that is the role I see Brown taking as a rookie with the Celtics.

The other prospect he reminds me of is Jae Crowder. Crowder was a defensive guy in college who gradually has improved his shooting since coming to the NBA. Crowder is a 3-and-D guy, a popular role in the new NBA, and Brown could turn into a player like him. The Celtics already have Crowder, so why would they draft a player whose ceiling is essentially as a Crowder clone?

Maybe Brown will become a good NBA player, but for now he does not make sense for the Celtics. The team needed some offensive firepower or a proven veteran and they got neither with their top pick.
