Chicago Bulls Need Stretch PF To Pair With Rajon Rondo And Dwyane Wade

By Dave Daniels

Dwyane Wade is coming home. He probably should’ve retired with the Miami Heat, but he chose to move on after they were stingy during contract negotiations. Heat president Pat Riley should feel really dumb right now, because he just let a guy walk out the door who helped Miami win three titles.

Wade will bring a championship swagger to the Chicago Bulls, and it will be truly bizarre to see him in a different kind of white and red uniform next year. The Bulls will be quite strong at three different positions, but they must now find a power forward who can space the floor. That is no easy task, and it will be interesting to see who they target. There aren’t many free agents left who fit that bill. Maybe they can get the right man through a trade, but they mustn’t shorten their bench too much in the process.

The problem with the Bulls as currently constructed is shooting. Wade and Rajon Rondo aren’t what you would call knockdown shooters. Wade has excellent touch from midrange, but his percentages are pretty awful when it comes to 3-pointers. Rondo, on the other hand, shouldn’t ever be allowed to shoot the ball from further than 10 feet. Jimmy Butler has improved his shot immensely during his time in the league; however, it is his ability to finish around the rim that makes him special. Rondo is confident that himself, Wade and Butler can work out their respective egos.

“Jimmy’s the youngest, he’s the engine here,” the PG told ESPN recently. “It’ll be Jimmy, Wade, and then it will be a pecking order. The main thing is that we have three alphas. There will be three alphas on the team. Just trying to mesh together and try to make sure we are doing the best thing for the team. Playing in Boston, playing with the Big Three, I was able to see how those guys interacted with one another. Knowing that everything doesn’t have to be perfect in practice.”

The Bulls will require a power forward who can get defenses out of the paint to make that happen. Ryan Anderson and Frank Kaminsky both come to mind as trade options, and it would also be intriguing if Chicago tried out Bobby Portis more often. He showed flashes of 3-point range last year, and head coach Fred Hoiberg liked what he saw from Portis throughout the season.

It would be disappointing if Chicago missed the playoffs after all the firepower they’ve added this summer, and hopefully Wade can convince the younger players to put the extra time in. One thing looks certain. The Bulls will need a stretch power forward to pair with their offseason additions, because Wade and Rondo aren’t exactly automatic from long distance.
