Another overtime game, another disappointing finish for Illini Nation.
Jordan Hamilton led all scorers with 25 points to lift Texas to a 90-84 overtime victory over No. 13 Illinois in the semifinals of the 2K Sports Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in New York City on Thursday. The Illini (3-1) will face Maryland for third place at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon – only 17 hours after finishing their semifinal.
The score was 45-45 at halftime, and Texas used an 8-0 run to take control at the beginning of the second half. The Illini fought back to a 63-63 tie with eight minutes left, and led 73-71 with 2:27 remaining. Two freshmen sent the game into overtime.
Texas freshman Cory Joseph made two free throws to tie at 2:27 and a fadeaway jumper for a 75-73 with 26 seconds left. Illinois freshman Jerome Richmond made a driving layup with 12 second left.
The Longhorns began the overtime period like the began the second half – on an 8-0 run. It was too much for the Illini to overcome.
Demetri McCamey scored 22 points and eight assists to lead Illinois and D.J. Richardson added 15. Brandon Paul scored 12 and Richmond dropped in 11 off the bench. Mike Davis had 13 rebounds.
Tristan Thompson had 20 points, nine rebounds and six blocks for Texas (3-0), who will face No. 4 Pittsburgh in the championship game on Friday.
