Bryce Cartwright scored a career-high 25 points and Matt Gatens added 20 points, but it wasn’t enough for Iowa to pick up its first Big Ten win.
The Hawkeyes (7-9, 0-4) increased its losing streak to four games, falling to Northwestern Wednesday night, 90-71, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Iowa scored the first four points of the game to get an early lead, but it was all downhill from there.
Unfortunately for Fran McCaffery and the Hawkeyes, it was the only edge Iowa would have in the entire game.
Northwestern (11-4, 2-3) continues to show why it deserves to be considered for its first-ever NCAA tournament berth, reachingthe 90 point mark for the fifth time this season. The Wildcats hit 14 3-pointers, and four Wildcats reached double figures in scoring.
Sophomore Drew Crawford hit five 3s and scored 19 points to lead to Wildcats. Michael Thompson, John Shurna, and JerShonn Cobb added 17, 16, and 12 points, respectively.
Tthings could get worse before they get better for McCaffery and the Hawkeyes. Iowa’s next two games are road contests against ranked opponents.
The squad travels to Minneapolis to face the Golden Gophers Jan. 16, then head to Columbus to face Ohio State on Jan. 19.
