In a game that wasn’t even supposed to happen because of a monumental snow storm in Iowa City, and what Tom Izzo–Michigan State Head Coach–said was the worst performance of his entire tenure at Michigan State, the Hawkeyes got their second win in the Big Ten in grand fashion, dominating the Spartans 72-52 Wednesday night.
Although Izzo made is sound like it was all his players’ fault, the Iowa men had an outstanding performance.
Matt Gatens lead the Hawks with 19 points and he scored his 1,000th career point at Iowa. Following close behing, Jarroyd Cole had 13 points and nine rebounds. And Bruce Cartwright had 12 points along with a career-high 10 assists.
A Spartan team who started at No. 2 has fallen to (13-9, 5-5). It could have been from the travel or from the crazy weather, but there was no life in this Michigan State team Wednesday night.
To start the game, the Hawkeyes went on a 15-2 run. They made 12 out of their first 15 shots and forced the Spartans to 1 and 11 shooting.
Iowa improves to 9-13, 2-8 on the season. Their next match-up comes on Saturday afternoon at Indiana 3:05 p.m. CST.
