An announcement is expected to be formally made late Monday, but according to sources close to the situation, Loyola (IL) has decided to fire head coach Jim Whitesell.

Whitesell has spent the previous seven seasons at the helm in Chicago.

Loyola (IL) began the season strong at 8-2 overall, but struggled down the stretch before finishing the season at 16-15 overall. Loyola (IL) was 7-11 in Horizon League play.

Over the course of seven seasons, Whitesell compiled a 109-106 record in Chicago, and the recent 16-15 mark was his first winning season since 2006-2007.

With Butler dominating the Horizon league over the course of the last few seasons, other programs such as Cleveland State and UW-Milwaukee emerged as contenders near the top of the league in 2010-2011. Loyola (IL), however, finished 8th in the 10-team league.

Whitesell was 50-70 in Horizon League play during his tenure at Loyola (IL).

A search for Whitesell’s replacement is expected to soon follow.
