Minnesota gets first ever look at Virginia Tech

In the 13th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge, the Minnesota Gophers basketball team will host the Virginia Tech Hokies. The game will take place at Williams Arena on November 29th. The time has not been established.

This will be the first time in history these two programs will meet. That fact is quite surprising considering Minnesota’s basketball program has been around since 1895, and Virginia Tech’s since 1909.

Virginia Tech finished the 2010 season with a 21-11 (9-7 ACC) record last year and lost to Wichita State in the second round of the NIT. The Gophers missed out on postseason play after droppping 10 of their last 11 games and finished with a 17-14 (6-12 Big Ten) record.

Tubby Smith faced Virginia Tech twice as a coach for the Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia was victorious in both matchups.

The Gophers are 4-8 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. They lost to Virginia in last year’s matchup. Minnesota’s last win in the challenge came in 2008 against Virginia at Williams Arena.
