Mike Krzyzewski will be seeking win No. 903 on Tuesday night against Michigan State at Madison Square Garden. With a victory, Coach K would pass his mentor Bobby Knight on the all-time wins list.
Krzyzewski and Knight are tied right now for the most wins in college basketball history at 902. That simple fact will never occur again once Duke wins a game, but I’m sure Coach K is in no rush with Knight out of the picture. The two have so much admiration for the other. Both will be so proud once win No. 903 can be scored in the record books.
The No. 6 Duke Blue Devils fearless leader was actually the point guard for Bobby Knight’s Army team in the 1960’s. Coach K was recruited from Chicago by the legendary coach. The two have grown to be extremely close friends, sharing loads of basketball knowledge. With Mike Krzyzewski’s next win, he will be No. 1 on the all-time list and Knight will be forever second…or third…or fourth…or fifth.
The Blue Devils snuck past Belmont for their first win of the season and then routed Presbyterian for their second victory and Coach K’s 902nd career win. Michigan State lost their only contest of the season to the top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on an obviously neutral court.
It won’t be an easy test for the Blue Devils (most tests are probably easy for Duke athletes) on Tuesday night against a tough Tom Izzo led team. What a spectacle it’s going to be on the greatest stage in the world at Madison Square Garden. Coach K and company couldn’t of asked for a better scenario.
