After opening this season on a 14-0 run the Illinois Fighting Illini basketball team has absolutely fallen apart. Tonight they dropped their sixth straight game to #9 Ohio State losing 83-67.
Which is odd-considering that on January 10 of this year, the Illini pulled off an outstanding game beating then ranked #5 Ohio winning 79-74. Brandon Paul pulled off a career high night scoring 43 points, including two key free throws in the final seconds of the game.
Tonight’s matchup was the exact opposite. For starters, Brandon Paul only had nine points. NINE! He went 2-for-9 from the field and 5-for-6 at the line. Leading the Illini was Sophomore Center Meyers Leonard with 21 points. He also had five rebounds.
But it was no match for Jared Sullinger and his Ohio State team. Sullinger combined with teammates William Buford and Deshaun Thomas for a total of 47 points.
Many people are saying that before the end of the season, Bruce Weber will be out of a job. I feel that though Bruce leaving the Illini basketball program very well could happen, I highly doubt that he will be gone during the season.
With only three games to go, the Illini have got to be extremely frustrated on many ends, just ask Sophomore Center Meyers Leonard about his breakdown after the Nebraska loss this past weekend. It’s not often you see a guy like that shedding tears on the bench as the clock hit zero.
The Fighting Illini fell to 5-10 in the Big Ten and 16-12 overall. With the win, Ohio State (11-4)-(23-5) temporarily moved out of a second place tie with Michigan in the Big Ten.
