Big 12 Basketball: Introducing West Virginia and TCU

Today marks the official entry date for TCU and West Virginia into the Big 12 basketball world.

They will be, essentially, replacing Texas A&M and Missouri, who are both leaving to join the SEC.

I will be writing season previews for the two teams shortly, but here is a short introduction to the two newest members of the Big 12 conference.

TCU Horned Frogs

Coach: Trent Johnson (First Year)

Arena: Daniel-Meyer Coliseum (capacity: 7,201)

2011-12 Record: 18-15 (7-7 conference)

NCAA Tournament History: Seven total appearances, Four Sweet Sixteen appearances (1952, 1953, 1959, 1968), One Elite Eight appearance (1968)

Notable Players: Dick O’Neal, Kurt Thomas, Ad Dietzel, Reggie Smith

Former Homes: Mountain West Conference

West Virginia Mountaineers

Coach: Bob Huggins (Fifth Year)

Arena: WVU Coliseum (capacity: 14,000)

2011-12 Record: 18-15 (7-7 conference)

NCAA Tournament History: 25 total appearances, Eight Sweet Sixteen appearances (1959, 1960, 1963, 1998, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010), Three Elite Eight appearances (1959, 2005, 2010), Two Final Four appearances (1959, 2010), NCAA Tournament Runner-Up (1959)

Notable Players: Bucky Waters, Greg Jones, Alex Ruoff, Da’Sean Butler
