Big East Breakouts: Notre Dame's Scott Martin

By chrismolicki

Its very rare that a player is given a sixth season of eligibility in college basketball, but that was the case with Notre Dame‘s Scott Martin. He played at Purdue his freshman year, sat out the following two seasons, and then played two years with the Fighting Irish. Now, he will be a sixth year senior, and looks to push Notre Dame over the edge and into the conversation of the top teams for this coming season.

Martin really helped out the team last season with the absence of Tim Abromaitis by averaging 9.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game while starting every game. Although he’s 6’8″, he’s listed as a guard, which has caused matchup problems for many teams.

After playing basketball for so long, Martin has done wonders developing his game. His ability to shoot threes as well as score inside is something that speaks about his versatility. Along with that, Martin is a solid defender and can grab boards.

Notre Dame as a whole is a team that seems primed for a breakout. Pretty much everyone is returning (except Abromaitis, but he was hurt all last season). With a full offseason to work, the trio of Jack Cooley, Eric Atkins, and Jerian Grant should all improve and combine with Martin to make the Irish a force in the Big East.

Despite the surprising success last year, Notre Dame flopped in both the Big East and NCAA tournaments, mainly because they just hadn’t reached their fully potential. I think this year they will.

Head coach Mike Brey referred to Martin as the team’s “glue guy.” He will hold everything together for the Irish and really be the difference maker in their season.
