The Illinois State Basketball team will go to battle this season under the leadership of a new head coach. Dan Muller – former Redbird star has taken over for Tim Jankovich as the head coach. Jankovich resigned his position, and was named the top assistant for head coach Larry Brown at Southern Methodist University. Muller spent 12 seasons as the assistant coach at Vanderbilt, under head coach Kevin Stallings. The new Redbird coach moved his away through the ranks, and was one of the top assistant coaches in the nation before moving to a top dog.
Gary Friedman, the athletic director at IllinoisState University had this to say regarding the hiring of Muller: “I stated at the beginning of this search that we were going to find the right fit for Illinois State University. During our very thorough process, Dan Muller emerged as that right fit,” Friedman said. “After talking with several basketball people across the country it was evident that Dan was the complete package, in terms of academics, recruiting, evaluation, player development, in-game coaching and game preparation. He also brings a strong coaching pedigree and a love for this institution and program. We are thrilled to have Dan back home to lead our men’s basketball program.”
The former Redbird guard led the Redbirds to two regular season titles, and two MVC tournament titles. All four years Muller was a player at ISU, the Redbirds
reached the postseason; including NCAA tournament trips in 1997 and 1998. With
1,445 points, Muller ranks 10th on the ISU career scoring list. Muller compiled a 91-37 record as a player, and started every game of his career (128 games). The guard was named the Missouri Valley Defensive Player of the Year twice, and also the MVP of the Valley Tournament in 1998. Aside from his talents on the court, Muller was an excellent student – being named All-American on the GTE Academic team, and also the Bone Scholar; as the high academic athlete. Muller had a short stint with the Vancouver Grizzlies following his days at ISU.
Muller took a blow when he found out one of the top returning players from the 2011-2012 team that made it to the MVC Finals would transfer. Nic Moore is leaving ISU and will follow Jankovic to SMU. Muller will inherit a team that has no senior’s on their roster.
