Drake grew up in Canada with his mother but he spent most of his summers in Memphis living with his father. While living there he grew into a Memphis Tigers fan and became close with their former coach John Calipari. As his fame as a rapper grew, so did his friendship with coach Cal.
So when Calipari moved to Kentucky to become the new head coach Drake followed and became one of the most famous Big Blue Nation fans. Ashley Judd aside, Drake quickly became one of the most noteworthy fans at Wildcats games and even got the opportunity to coach an intrasquad scrimmage game in 2009.
Drake is now such a big part of the University of Kentucky basketball program that Calipari sent the rapper a customized 2012 National Championship ring with his nickname, “Drizzy” emblazoned on the side.
Programs just don’t hand those things out, much less customize them but coach Cal considers Drake a big enough part to include him in their championship season commemoration. Calipari is already a recruiting master but having someone like Drake hanging around the program is a plus as potential recruits will easily be able to relate and gravitate towards the rapper.
Although Drake was in Europe when the Wildcats won the national title he still tweeted out his support from across the pond. His tweet from that night read, ”I’m over in Europe…but its still GO BIG BLUE!!!!”
Calipari finally won his first national championship after being close the past few years with Kentucky and Memphis. It seems that he is trying to reward the people that have stuck with him and Drake was fortunate to be one of those people.
