Brett Kingma: Former Oregon Guard To Transfer To Washington State

By Joshua Casey

In what has become the norm for college athlete transfers, college of choice decisions, free-agent signings, etc., former Oregon guard Brett Kingma announced on Tuesday, via Twitter, that he would be transferring to Washington State University. Kingma appeared in 19 games for Oregon this past season and averaged just 3.1 points, and 0.8 rebounds per game. Kingma’s sort of breakout performance came against Vanderbilt in the Ducks opening game of the season. Kingma scored 10 points in that game.

Kingma, who is originally from Mill Creek, Washington., is dashing from an Oregon team that went 24-10 last season, and 13-5 in the Pac-12 conference. Kingma’s transfer comes as no surprise for the Ducks who are welcoming six players from a pretty strong 2012NCAA recruiting class that landed them the #47 recruit, guard Dominic Artis. Artis, who was also being pursued by UCLAmakes the departure of Kingma irrelevant as Artis is seen as a better player.

Artis’ transfer, though may come with a harsh penalty. Because Kingma’s transfer is within the Pac-12 conference he may, or may not, be subject to the intra-conference transfer rule which states that the student athlete is “required to fulfill one academic year of residence and lose one season of competition in all sports before being eligible to compete.” The rule also states that athletes cannot, “receive athletically related financial aid during this period of ineligibility.”

Kingma was ranked just out of the top 100 by Rivals.com when he came out of high school in 2011. He was seenas a sharpshooter, and was given a four star ranking. Kingma may get to transfer over those sharpshooting skills at Washington State as they may need all the help they can get. The Cougars finished 19-18 in last season, and 7-11 in the Pac-12 conference.
