Last Season Record: (10-22, 3-15), 11th in CAA
CAA Team Previews: Hofstra Pride
Key Losses: 6-5 G Mike Moore. During a very strong 2011-2012 senior season, Moore averaged 19.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. He put on a shooting clinic as well knocking down 39 percent of his 3-point attempts and 82 percent from the foul line, earning him a spot on the 2nd Team All-CAA squad. Moore’s fellow senior last season, 6-5 G/F Nathaniel Lester, averaged 14.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per contest. The two frontcourt-mates were co-captains last season. The Pride’s frontcourt will take a huge loss this season.
Key Additions: Hoftsra has a huge incoming freshman class this season. These newcomers are 6-8 F Darren Payen (Hamden Hall,Conn.), 6-8 F Jimmy Hall (St. Anthony) and6-6 F Jordan Allen, who red-shirted in 2011-12 for the Pride. In the frontcourt they will be adding ), 6-2 G Dallas Anglin (Seton Hall Prep) and 6-3 G Kentrell Washington (Las Vegas, NV (Clark)).
Coach: The head coach at Hofstra, Mo Cassara, is entering his third season with the Pride this year. Cassara has coached his teams to a collect 31-34 record at Hofstra. He also made previous college stops as an Assistant Coach at Boston College and Dayton.
Player to Watch: 5-9 G Stevie Mejia. In 2011-2012, the speedy little man averaged 6.0 points, 2.1 assists and 1.4 rebounds per game. After shooting an impressive 36% from three-point land last year Mejia will be looking to shoot more this season with the absence of Moore and Lester. One of only two returning starters, Mejia will likely be a senior captain and a leader for the Pride this season.
Prediction: The Pride are undergoing somewhat of a youth movement this season, as the majority of their team has not even celebrated their 20th birthday yet. Head Coach Cassara has sub-.500 record at the school thus far in his short career and I don’t expect that change this winter. Hofstra should find themselves floating near the bottom of the CAA standings once February and March come around.
