2012-13 CAA Team Previews: James Madison Dukes
Last Season Record: (12-20, 5-13), 8th in CAA
Key Losses: 5-9 G Humpty Hitchens. In 2011-2012, the electric senior averaged 14.9 points, 2.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists per game. Hitchens also Led the CAA in three point field goals made per game with 2.7. To culminate his career, the Ohio product was named 3rd Team All-CAA for his efforts.
Key Additions: This season, the Dukes have a very large incoming freshman class. The list includes 6-4 G Ron Curry (Pennsauken, N.J. (Paul VI)), 6-6 G Charles Cook (Trenton, N.J. (Trenton Catholic)), 6-4 G Andrew Nation (Plant City, Fla. (Faith Baptist Christian School)), 6-10 F Dimitrije Cabarkapa, Novi Sad, Serbia (High Medical School)), 6-9 F Taylor Bessick (Philadelphia, Pa. (Rise Academy)). The class is full of size and speed from top to bottom.
Coach: Entering his fifth season as JMU’s head coach, Matt Brady holds an even 67-67 record through his first four seasons. The majority of those wins came during his two 20-win campaigns that both ended in postseason appearances. Brady joined the JMU staff after four seasons as head coach at Marist College.
Player to Watch: 6-6 G AJ Davis. After transferring from Wyoming and sitting out the 2010-2011 season per NCAA Transfer rules, Davis had a very successful first season in a Dukes uniform. Davis led the team in scoring when he averaged 15.9 per contest and also grabbed 4.7 rebounds and dished 1.9 assists per game last year. This season, Davis should have a strong senior campaign and contend for a spot on the All-CAA 1st or 2nd Teams.
Prediction: In 2011-2012, the Dukes are losing a leading scorer from last season in Humpty Hitchens. However, the team has a large senior class that is ready to go out with a bang. Along with Davis, returning starters 6-4 G Devon Moore and 6-7 F Andrey Semenov and company should be somewhat f a force to be reckoned with in the Conference. Expect an improvement in this season’s Dukes squad.
