Is Oregon the Frontrunner for JUCO Transfer Waverly Austin After USF Ineligibility?

News broke on Friday afternoon that incoming South Florida forward Waverly Austin was ineligible.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Austin academically cleared by the NCAA, however not all of his credits from Palm Beach State College (FL) transferred over to USF.

The loss of Austin will likely have a strong affect on the Bulls this season as their front court becomes drastically thinner with yesterday’s news. Austin was considered a top-five junior college transfer by many and would have been a very nice addition for head coach Stan Heath.

The Bulls, who are coming off one of their better seasons in recent memory, are looking to replace the loss of Augustus Gilchrist down low.

Now that Austin is seemingly back on the open market, the rush towards a new decision may circulate soon. As of right now, the team that is becoming notably linked to Austin is that of Oregon.[blackbirdpie url="https://twitter.com/gregauman/status/239050449133645824"]

Head coach Dana Altman landed senior-to-be and Wake Forest transfer Tony Woods prior to last season. Woods went on to set the Ducks’ single season block record (51) during his first season in Eugene.

However, there is no question that the addition of Austin could certainly help improve the Ducks’ front line almost immediately.

Albeit just a quick rumor, the Ducks do appear as the frontrunner to land Austin for the time being.

South Florida said in a statement on Friday that Austin will enroll at an institution this fall.
