Terrapin fans know Eric Hayes, and Hayes has certainly seen his fair share of Maryland basketball. Hayes was a key component of the Terps starting in 2006 leading up to his graduation in 2010. Hayes’s run including two appearances in the NCAA tournament.
Now, Hayes is preparing to embark on a completely different college basketball expedition. This one, however, starts on the sidelines as a coach.
Hayes met with current Maryland coach Mark Turgeon early in the summer to discuss a coaching position. After a few brief meetings, the decision arrived and Hayes was announced as a member of the Terrapins coaching staff for the 2012-2013 season.
Hayes was a very solid player during his stint as the Maryland guard. In four years, he averaged 9 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal, while playing just under 30 minutes a game.
Following his playing days, Hayes played overseas for two different teams. Most recently, Hayes was offered a spot with a D-League team, but turned it down in favor of coaching.
The whole Maryland community is certainly excited to have Hayes on board. His knowledge of both Maryland basketball and basketball as a whole will surely help a young Maryland team reach their sky-high potential.
