Arizona State Set to Add Two Former NBA Coaches to Staff

Arizona State is reportedly set to hire a pair of former NBA coaches to its men’s basketball staff.

After initial rumors that head coach Herb Sendek was looking to hire former NBA head coach Eric Musselman to his staff, it appears that those rumors will be coming true.

According to ESPN‘s Andy Katz, Sendek will hire both Musselman and former Portland Trail Blazers assistant coach Larry Greer. An announcement from the school is expected on Tuesday, according to the report.

In addition to his time at the NBA level, Greer has also spent prior stints at both Wright State and Boston University. As for Musselman, he led both the Sacramento Kings and the Golden State Warriors on past occasions.

The vacancies on the Sun Devils’ staff came after both Scott Pera (Penn) and Lamont Smith (Washington) left the university for similar positions elsewhere.

Sendek, who is believed by many to be on the hot seat this upcoming season, wanted to add a pair of NBA presences to increase the team’s ability to adapt and improve quickly.

Point guard Jahii Carson is eligible this season after sitting out all of last year due to academic issues. Carson will start in the back court for Sendek this season and may hold the key to Arizona State’s ability to build off a 10-21 season from a year ago.

Only time will tell if the additions will help the Sun Devils this season, especially if Sendek’s door is closing as speculated.

Arizona State finished 6-12 last season in what proved to be a down year for the Pac 12 Conference.
