What the Addition of Dezmine Wells Means for Maryland
Earlier this morning, Xavier transfer Dezmine Wells announced over Twitter that his next destination for playing basketball will be the University of Maryland. This decision should make Maryland fans happy for numerous reasons.
For one, Wells is a 6’5 swingman with unbelievable athleticism and a wide array of both offensive and defensive talents. It is unlikely that Wells will be eligible to play this upcoming season, so his impact will be felt next year as Wells joins a blossoming young Terrapins team.
Some would argue that the addition of Wells has put the Terps on the same talent level as ACC powerhouses North Carolina and Duke. With the strong freshmen class of this year that includes Jake Layman and Shaquille Cleare, in addition to the incoming players in 2013 that includes Wells and hopefully for Terp fans some other highly regarded recruits, the future for Maryland basketball looks extremely bright.
As a side note, the addition of Wells still leaves enough scholarships to attain the highly sought out Harrison (Aaron and Andrew) twins, who are ranked 2 and 4 respectively on the ESPN 100 list, and are strongly considering Maryland.
The man who gets the credit for shaping the current state of Maryland basketball is without a doubt head coach Mark Turgeon. Turgeon has shown over and over again that he can recruit with the best of them.
The most recent example, of course, was beating out Kentucky, Memphis, and Oregon in the race to obtain the service of Wells. These are all considered very strong recruiters and Turgeon stepped up to the plate and delivered. The strong freshmen class of this year also attains to his talent as a recruiter.
While Wells may not have an immediate impact due to his ineligibility as a transfer, Wells will certainly have a huge impact on the team next year due to his extremely high ceiling on both sides of the ball. While the small picture impact of this pick-up is very noticeable, it is important to look at the big picture as well, and that is that Turgeon is putting together a strong team of talented young players that can put Maryland back on the map.
With Coach Turgeon at the reigns, Maryland fans should be looking forward to both the present, as well as the future.
