CAA Under the Radar: George Mason Guard Sherrod Wright

With the departures of All-CAA forwards Ryan Pearson and Mike Morrison, the George Mason Patriots will most likely be more guard oriented this season. Among the talented guards is the Mount Vernon, NY-native Sherrod Wright.

Wright had a bit of an up-and-down season last year after coming off of a medical redshirt in 2010-11.  He started 14 games for the Patriots  and averaged 26.4 minutes per game.  His 9.6 points per game ranked third on the team behind Pearson and Morrison.  Wright found a rhythm late in the season as he scored double figures in seven straight games in February.

At 6-4, 196, Wright plays bigger and stronger than his frame.  He fearlessly attacks the rim and isn’t scared to make a highlight-reel jam in the process.  His passion for the game is apparent every time he steps of the floor and he is an instant spark of energy.  Wright also brings a rebounding presence you wouldn’t expect from a 6-4 guard.  He was third behind Pearson and Morrison in rebounding, hauling down 106 boards for the season.   He shot 52 percent from the field and led the CAA in free-throw percentage shooting 85.9 from the charity stripe.

In addition to these skills, Wright will also look to take more of a leadership role in his junior season.  Among those returning from last season’s squad, he is the leader in points, rebounds and minutes played.  He has already showed the capability to lead with his play and hit clutch baskets.  Wright made one of college basketball’s best highlights last season when he hit a buzzer-beater from beyond the 3-point line to down VCU on Feb. 14.

Under head coach Paul Hewitt–who was known for developing great guards at Georgia Tech–Wright will flourish with an expanded role.   Mason will look to reimpose their high CAA standard, going 24-9 last season .  Hewitt will make sure Wright and the rest of the Patriots will be up for the challenge.
