Early season tournaments continue to emerge and increase from a competition standpoint. Non-conference schedules have gotten tougher and college basketball fans prepare for premier match-ups and upsets even in November.
Let’s take a look at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
Tournament Date(s): November 16-19, 2012.
Tournament Location(s): Barclays Center, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Tournament Summary: The Coaches vs. Cancer Classic has a loaded championship round that will certainly make for some must-see basketball. Brigham Young lost Noah Hartsock, but Brandon Davies is still around and can be a monster down low. Despite Florida State losing a handful of key players, their defense always keeps them competitive. And, of course, they’ve got Michael Snaer, who has increasingly high expectations in 2012-13. He’s a big time player with a lot of confidence and a knack for scoring. Saint Joseph’s is a squad that has a lot of talent coming back. Carl Jones and Langston Galloway lead a high-octane backcourt that averaged over 30 points per game last season. With all the news of the Irish going to the ACC, let’s not look past the fact that they are legit a Big East contender this year. The core of Jack Cooley, Jerian Grant, Eric Atkins, and Scott Martin could have the potential to take the conference by storm.
Player to Watch: Michael Snaer, Florida State: It was between Snaer and Davies, but I went with the Seminole that is more of a game changer. Snaer has hit several game winning shots in his career at Florida State and is the heart of their offense. His 14 point per game from a season ago should skyrocket. Early in his career, he was mainly a three-point and defensive specialist, but Snaer has a full arsenal of offense moves now, and as a senior, he has the potential to dominate.
