It will be madness in October again for George Mason basketball fans as the school will hold its 16th annual “Mason Madness” to kick off the season. The event will take place next Friday, Oct. 12 at 9 p.m. inside the Patriot Center. It will be free to the public, so grab your Patriots gear, face paint and blow horns and get ready for craziness.
An array of festivities will be at the crowd disposal. Before the Madness, the Pre Mason Madness, will begin at 7:30 p.m. outside the north entrance of the Patriot Center. This event features fan-friendly activities such as face painting, spirit team giveaways,a pumpkin ring toss and snacks galore.
Inside the arena, both the men’s and women’s team will be presented. Women’s head coach Jeri Porter will get the mob fired up about her 2012-13 team who look to improve on last season’s 15-16 record. Meanwhile, men’s head coach Paul Hewitt will also address the crowd fresh off his first year at George Mason. He lead the team to a 24-9 season, going 14-4 in the conference. The team made it to the CAA Tournament Semifinals before getting bounced out by eventual champions, VCU. Hewitt will introduce this year’s team that includes the Patriots’ returning leading scorer, Sherrod Wright.
There will be performances by a number of entertainment groups including Doc Nix and the Green Machine, UrbanKnowlogy, Masonettes and the Patriots cheerleading squad. One Mason student will be randomly selected to take a shot from half-court in hopes of winning the grand prize of $10,000.
The box office will also be open during the event allowing attendees to purchase individual-game tickets for the Patriots 14-game home schedule as this year’s team looks to match the undefeated home record in conference play of last season. George Mason plays UVA in the home-opener on Nov. 9.
