Georgia Tech to Start Season in New Home, McCamish Pavilion

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets basketball team will start this season in a new home.

No, they are not leaving their spot in downtown Atlanta. But instead of Alexander Memorial Coliseum, the place where the Jackets have played for 55 years, the team will now be in a newly built $50 million arena called, McCamish Pavilion.

The Jackets will get to try their new home at their first game Nov. 9 against the Tulane Green Wave. The new facility will have 8,600 seats and features a new two-tone hardwood floor and a huge center-hung scoreboard.

“I look forward to spending many unforgettable days and nights with all of you in Georgia Tech’s sparkling new McCamish Pavilion,” Tech Athletic Director Dan Radakovich told fans recently.

Second-year coach Brian Gregory said he is impressed by the new digs.

“I’ve been fortunate to coach in some pretty good arenas, but I think this one’s going to be something special,” Gregory told the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper.

The team may be hoping the new arena will bring in some new luck for the Jackets this year. Last year, Gregory’s first after replacing longtime coach Paul Hewitt, was a tough season for team.

Tech ended last year in the cellar of the Atlantic Coast Conference with an 11-20 record overall.
