In a press release issued on Wednesday, Charlotte announced that junior guard DeMario Mayfield has been sidelined with a high ankle sprain.

Mayfield suffered the injury during practice last week, but has been working hard on recovering quickly. The 6-foot-5 guard is expected to miss the 49ers’ first exhibition game against Pfeiffer on Nov. 1.

Mayfield began his career at Georgia, but transferred following his freshman season. The guard sat out the 2010-11 season per NCAA rules before hitting the court for the first time with Charlotte a season ago.

Mayfield instantly became one of the 49ers’ top back court threats, averaging 11.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Expectations continue to rise heading into the season and fans alike can only hope that this minor setback is only that.

The stats that Mayfield accumulated a season ago ranked him amongst the team’s best despite it being his first season within the program. Mayfield was second on the team in rebounding and third on the team in scoring a year ago. He scored in double-figures offensively in 18 games, a mark that includes 13 of the team’s final 15 games.

The 49ers are searching for improvement within the Atlantic 10 Conference this season, but the recent additions of both Butler and VCU have created a top-heavy effect within the league. As the season progresses, the conference has a very good chance to emulate into the top non-power six league in the land.

Charlotte opens up the 2012-13 season on Nov. 9 against Charleston Southern.
