The Wake Forest front court was weakened by a pair of transfers this past off-season, so sophomore forward Daniel Green had the potential to step in and increase his numbers from a season ago.

However, during an exhibition game in Ontario, Canada over the weekend, Green went down, tearing his ACL. The injury comes at a devastating time given the start of the season next week and will more thank likely sideline the 6-foot-10 big man for the entire 2012-13 season.

After back-to-back seasons in the basement of the ACC, head coach Jeff Bzdelik has begun to face scrutiny in relation to his job security. While the loss of Green is not overwhelming for the Demon Deacons, it certainly hurts the front line depth and rotation. Aside from Green, only 7-foot freshman Andre Washington is taller.

Washington will look to fill the void and make the most out of the minutes that will more than likely be available. “No question Andre was going to be a fixture anyway,” Bzdelik told the Winston-Salem Journal. “There’s no doubt that to expedite his development he needs to get in there and get minutes.”

Washington has been held out of practice and play for the past week himself, recovering from concussion-like symptoms.

The injury for Green occurred in the fourth quarter of the team’s game against Brock and will likely force Bzdelik to redshirt Green this upcoming season. Green is scheduled to have surgery in early November.

An original native of Colleyville, Texas, Green averaged 1.4 points and 1.7 rebounds per game in just over seven minutes of action per game.

Wake Forest opens up the 2012-13 season on Nov. 9 against Radford.
