The Indiana Hoosiers will enter the 2012-13 college basketball season as the team to beat, since they are the No. 1 team in the polls and all. Although Indiana is expected to have a great season, when will the Hoosiers record their first loss? This team is certainly good enough to run the tables, but the Hoosiers do play in the Big Ten, which will be one of the best conferences in the nation this year.
Indiana has a relatively easy out-of-conference schedule, with North Carolina being its toughest matchup. Indiana should win all of their games until it reaches Big Ten play. The Tar Heels lost four of its five starters from last season. Although North Carolina will have a very talented team, it will be nowhere as good as it was last season.
Big Ten play won’t be easy this year for Indiana, but their toughest game of the season won’t be until Feb. 10, when Indiana plays the Ohio State Buckeyes on the road. Although Indiana will have tough tests against Michigan State, Wisconsin and Michigan earlier in the year, those three games will be in Bloomington.
Therefore, I am predicting Indiana to lose its first game of the season on the road against Ohio State. However, the Hoosiers could easily lose against North Carolina, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Michigan.
The Buckeyes may have lost Jared Sullinger and William Buford, but it will have a very stingy defense all season long. Aaron Craft and Deshaun Thomas will be a handful for Indiana, especially when they have their home crowd behind them.
With Cody Zeller on the team and four other returning starters, the Hoosiers will be very hard to beat this year. They will not only have a very good offense, but a great defense as well. This team will have one of the best front courts entering the season, with Zeller, Will Sheehey and Christian Watford.
