University of Colorado junior forward Andre Roberson has been named to the John R. Wooden Award Top 50 watch list, by the Los Angeles Athletic Club, Thursday afternoon.
Voted on in a preseason poll of national media members, the watch list is comprised of the top 50 student-athletes who are the early-season favorites to take home college basketball’s most prestigious honor. The players who make this preseason list are based off of their performance from the season before as well as their team’s overall record.
Roberson is the second Colorado player in the last three seasons to be named to the preseason Wooden Top-50 award watch list. Former Buffaloes standout Alec Burks was named to the same list in the 2009-2010 season, eventually finishing the year in the top 20.
If last season was any indication, Roberson will likely finish in the top-20 by the time March rolls around. The San Antonio native was a Pac 12 All-Conference First Team selection a season ago as he led the Buffaloes to the Pac 12 Tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament win over No. 7 UNLV.
Roberson shattered the single-season rebounding record (401) for Colorado last year and only needs 357 to break the all-time rebounding record set by Stephane Pelle (1,054, 1999-2003). Breaking that record should not be a problem for Roberson as he finished third in the nation last season averaging 11.1 rpg. The perennial All-American candidate is a double-double machine, finishing last year with 20 of them, which was good for fifth nationally.
Along with being named to the Wooden Top-50 watch list Roberson is also the preseason favorite to win both the Pac 12 MVP and Defensive Player of the Year Award. Even though he may fly a little under the radar across the country, he is well known in Pac 12 country and he is one of the top players in the conference.
He is shooting up the NBA Draft boards and is he is finally starting to get the recognition that he deserves and by season’s end the rest of the country will surely know who he is.
