Roy Williams Undecided on 5th Starter for North Carolina
Roy Williams knows 4 out of the 5 starters for tomorrow nights home opener. North Carolina and Coach Williams are confident in freshmen point guard, Marcus Paige to run the offense.
Coach Williams is also definite with James Michael McAdoo at forward along with Dexter Strickland and Reggie Bullock at the wings. The only question is who will join these four Tar Heels in the starting lineup for tomorrow night.
Coach Williams definitely has enough talented, but inexperienced players to choose from. He also has one experienced player in Leslie McDonald that he could start.
In the Tar Heels scrimmage against Shaw University, Desmond Hubert was the fifth starter. Obviously, Coach Williams wasn’t impressed with Hubert’s preseason and is looking to replace him in the line up.
A coach known for keeping the same starting 5 for the whole season may have to change up his strategy this season. Coach Williams will be shuffling different players into that fifth spot in the beginning of the season, until he finds the right fit.
Williams has come out and said that he is waiting for someone to step up and earn the spot in practice. He wants a player in there that is going to go all out every play and really show that he wants to be on the court. So far for the Heels, no one has stepped in practice.
Among the options are; Leslie McDonald, P.J. Hairston, Desmond Hubert, Joel James, Brice Johnson, and Jackson Simmons.
McDonald and Hairston probably won’t get the nod even though they are both talented players. If one of them were to start, it would bump a strict shooter in Bullock to the 4, which is highly unlikely to happen.
This leaves Hubert, Simmons, Johnson and James. Hubert and Simmons were both strictly bench players last year. James and Johnson are both talented freshmen.
The two freshmen provide more talent for the Heels, but not a lot of experience. If Williams is comfortable with starting two freshman, one of them will most likely start. Hubert can provide could length on defense along with rebounding, but can’t score on offense. Simmons is a hard worker and plays scrappy.
Coach Williams has a tough decision to make for the season. Who is he going to start in the season opener tomorrow night?
