There were plenty of mid-majors out there that made some noise this weekend in college basketball, but which team made the most? George Mason started off the season on the right note by knocking off Virginia in the final minute of play. South Alabama upset the Florida State Seminoles. Although South Alabama probably had the biggest shocker out out of the bunch, the Creighton Blue Jays had the biggest impact this weekend, at least for a mid-major team.
Coming into their season opener ranked, the Blue Jays showed that they were one of the best mid-major schools by knocking off a very good North Texas team. Heck, they showed that they were one of the best teams in the country for that matter. The Mean Green only have one of the best players in the nation and a future lottery pick. Tony Mitchell dropped 18 points on Creighton, but that clearly was not enough. Creighton won in convincing fashion by the score of 71-51.
Creighton’s Doug McDermott showed why he was one of the nation’s best scorers, with 21 points in the game.
Although South Alabama beat a ranked opponent on the road, Florida State did not look like the better team in this one. The Seminoles had huge victories last season beating Duke and North Carolina two times each. However, that was FSU’s last year’s team.
Not taking anything away from South Alabama because its victory was very impressive, but Creighton beat a school that many people regarded as one of the best mid-majors in college basketball. Not to mention, it pretty much whooped North Texas.
