Week 1 SEC Power Rankings

SEC Power Rankings

sec
Paul Abell-US PRESSWIRE

The first weekend of college basketball came and went, but what a great weekend that was. Although a lot happened in college basketball in the first weekend and during the best 24 hours known to man, which was Marathon Madness, not a whole lot changed in the SEC power rankings for week one.

Sure, the Kentucky Wildcats barely escaped Maryland in their season opener and then lost to the Duke Blue Devils, but the Wildcats are still the best team in the SEC, at least right now. Kentucky is definitely not playing like one of the best teams in the nation, but its talent speaks for itself. The Wildcats should rebound from their first loss of the season and if they don’t they clearly will not be the best team in the SEC.

As a whole, the SEC has done pretty well so far, only losing three out of 22 games.

As expected, Florida, Missouri and Tennessee won their season openers and are all still undefeated. However, tough games are on the horizon, with the Gators taking on the Wisconsin Badgers later on today.

Both Florida and Missouri had very impressive showings to start the season. Kenny Boynton and Phil Pressey came up big as expected. If both players keep performing how they did last week, it will be very hard to decide the SEC Player of the Year.

This conference is looking like a three team race, but don’t forget about the Volunteers.

Find out where your favorite team lies in the SEC power rankings for week one.

14. Mississippi State Bulldogs

bulldogs
Marvin Gentry-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 1-1

Mississippi State proved that it was the worst team in the SEC by losing to Troy to open its season. Unfortunately, for the Bulldogs, they will have to play the North Carolina Tar Heels next. Don’t expect an upset in that game.

3 of 15

13. Georgia Bulldogs

georgia
Kevin Liles-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 1-1

The Georgia Bulldogs did not have an impressive victory by any means against Jacksonville, only winning by six points. However, a victory is much better than a loss and the loss against Youngstown State does not look good on the resume.

Georgia will play Southern Miss this weekend. Hopefully Georgia can come up on top in that one because the Bulldogs will have to take on the No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers next week.

12. Auburn Tigers

auburn
John Reed-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 1-0

The Auburn Tigers are undefeated, and they will most likely not stay that way much longer. Murray State is next on the schedule and Isaiah Canaan and the rest of the Racers are one of the best mid-majors in the country once again this season.

Whether the case, senior Frankie Sullivan went off for the Tigers with 26 points in the first game of the season.

11. South Carolina Gamecocks

south carolina
Jeff Blake-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 1-0

It took overtime for South Carolina to beat the Milwaukee Panthers. The Gamecocks are not the most talented team in the SEC by any means, but at least they have Frank Martin coaching.

Well, unfortunately for Martin, he is going to be doing a lot of yelling all season long.

6 of 15

10. LSU Tigers

lsu
Crystal Logiudice-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 2-0

Shavon Coleman has stepped in for injured Johnny O’Bryant III very nicely. In two games, Coleman is averaging 15 points and seven rebounds per game. Not to mention, he had 25 points last game.

Luckily for the LSU, they will not play a ranked opponent until the Florida Gators on Jan. 12, but they will have to face the Marquette Golden Eagles a few games before that.

7 of 15

9. Vanderbilt Commodores

vanderbilt
Don McPeak-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 1-0

The Vanderbilt Commodores can really get on the radar by winning their next few games. Oregon should’t be a problem on the road, but after that we will really find out what Vanderbilt is made of.

Sophomore Kedren Johnson had a monster performance, with 25 points, six rebounds and six assists in the season opener.

8 of 15

8. Texas A&M Aggies

aggies
Troy Taormina-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 2-0

The way Texas A&M’s schedule is lined up, the Aggies could easily go undefeated for awhile. However, they will need the Turners (Elston and Ray) to come up big and the rest of the team to continue what it has been doing.

Texas A&M currently has four players scoring in double-digits.

9 of 15

7. Ole Miss Rebels

ole miss
Chuck Cook-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 2-0

Just like the rest of the SEC so far, Ole Miss has had it very easy and this easy out-of-conference schedule will continue for the Rebels this week.

Marshall Henderson and Murphy Holloway have been great for the Rebels so far, combining for 39.5 points per game.

10 of 15

6. Arkansas Razorbacks

arkansas
Beth Hall-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 1-0

Sam Houston State gave the Arkansas Razorbacks a fight for their money, but Arkansas still came up on top when it was all said and done.

The Razorbacks should go on a little winning streak, until they have to face Syracuse and Michigan.

11 of 15

5. Alabama Crimson Tide

alabama
Kelly Lambert-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 2-0

Trevor Lacey and Trevor Releford have been great as expected for Alabama. Releford is averaging 16 points per game and Lacey is averaging 19 points per game.

However, the Crimson Tide have been playing easy competition. Oregon State should be a little tougher, but Alabama will likely come up on top.

12 of 15

4. Tennessee Volunteers

tennessee
Randy Sartin-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 1-0

The Tennessee Volunteers will not be tested until they play Georgetown on Nov. 30. The Volunteers have been winning with a very balanced attack, and that will be the case all season long.

13 of 15

3. Missouri Tigers

tigers
Dak Dillon-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 2-0

In two games, Phil Pressey has averaged 20 points per game, along with 5.5 assists per game. Pretty beastly by anyones standards.

Missouri is doing just fine without Michael Dixon, but it would be that much better with him on the team.

14 of 15

2. Florida Gators

florida
Phil Sears-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 1-0

Florida’s game between Georgetown may have been canceled, but the Gators looked very impressive in its first win of the season against Alabama State. Yes, it is Alabama State, but Kenny Boynton, Patric Young and Erik Murphy looked great.

The Gators will have a real test when they take on the Wisconsin Badgers tonight.

1. Kentucky Wildcats

kentucky
Paul Abell-US PRESSWIRE

Record: 1-1

The Kentucky Wildcats only lost two games all of last season. Well, they already have one loss. Yes, Duke is a very good team and has a lot of experience, but there will be no excuse for the Wildcats come tournament time.

Kentucky was able to get back into the game against Duke, but a loss is a loss. Whether the case, the Wildcats’ very young and talented players need to learn how to play with each other. If they do, they could very well win another national championship.
