Colorado Benefits From Scoring Runs to Beat Dayton in Charleston Classic Opener
“We didn’t play perfect, but if the rest the tournament is like this, people will get their money’s worth.”
Those were the words of Colorado basketball’s head coach Tad Boyle after the Buffs 67-57 victory over Dayton to open the 2012 Charleston Classic.
It was true, Colorado did not play perfect. The word that could best describe their performance is sloppy but a win is a win and they did it with multiple scoring runs.
After falling behind 37-30 Colorado went on a 13-0 scoring run to regain the lead, something that they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Dayton would tie it up at 47 but then the Buffs utilized a 15-7 run to pretty much put the game out of reach.
Sparking those runs were sophomore Askia Booker and freshmen Xavier Johnson. It seemed like anytime that Colorado needed a bucket Booker stepped up and hit a big-time shot.
“I usually try to take the best shot for the team, if I’m open coach told me to shoot,” Booker said after the game. “I just want to win, at the end of the day I’m competing to win and if it takes me to hit a three or a layup or give a teammate a shot that’s what I’m going to do.”
Booker led Colorado with 16 points but it was his long-range shots that really made the difference in the game. Down 35-27 he hit a three to quell Dayton’s momentum, tied at 47 he hit a huge long-range shot to put Colorado back in front and he hit a dagger three to give Colorado it’s largest lead, basically sealing the victory.
His play along with the other two freshman, Johnson and Josh Scott who chipped in 13 points, was one of the reasons that the Buffs won but it really came down to a matter of who made the runs at the right time and it was Colorado that did that today.
