Banned from post-season play, the No. 23 ranked Connecticut Huskies began this year on an apparent road to nowhere. Yet the Huskies seem to be everywhere. After this weekend, the Huskies will have logged 11,200 miles in 15 days.
Just call them extreme road warriors. The Huskies opened the season Nov. 9 with a 66-62 upset win over the Michigan State Spartans in the Armed Forces Classic at Ramstein Airbase in Germany.
They traveled back to Hartford, Conn. and 48 hours later defeated Vermont in the home opener. Yesterday, they boarded a plane for St. Thomas, Virgin Islands where they will play in the Paradise Jam tonight against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
The Huskies are 2-0 and led by junior guard Shabazz Napier, who is averaging 19 points per game. Wake Forest is 1-0 after a win over Radford.
No rest for the weary.
According to the Hartford Courant, as soon as the Huskies arrived at their St. Thomas hotel, they made a short trip from the airport in an open-air vehicle, dropped their bags in their rooms, changed and headed straight for practice.
“We’ve got to get this jet lag off us a little bit,” Huskies Coach Kevin Ollie told the Courant. “And we have to work for an hour and 30 with some enthusiasm and effort.”
The Huskies won the Paradise Jam four years ago and finished that season in the Final Four.
The winner of the Huskies-Demon Deacons game will face the winner of the Iona-Quinnipiac game on Sunday. The Huskies could face George Mason or New Mexico in the championship game on Monday.
