Alabama may be the most underrated basketball team in the SEC. At the beginning of the season they seemed to be a team that would be the clear winners in the western division of the SEC, but would not create anything spectacular down the stretch. How wrong everyone was.
After a 4 – 0 start and an absolute dismantling of Villanova (77 – 55) on Friday to secure the 2K Classic trophy, Alabama is shaping up to be an SEC title contender. Many thought that with star player Tony Mitchell being kicked off the team and transferring to North Texas, Alabama would struggle on offense. Instead, Alabama is dominating on offense behind two talented Trevors (Trevor Lacy and Trevor Releford) – who look like two of the most talented athletes in the SEC. Alabama does not look bad on defense either; defense saved them in a narrow 3 point win over Oregon State. Alabama could pull off some major upsets early in the SEC schedule (Circle @ Missouri on January 8th).
The team that’s most nervous about the Crimson Tide’s rising momentum: The Cincinnati Bearcats. On Saturday, December 1st, Alabama rolls into Cincinnati. The Bearcats are ranked and with star Forward Sean Kilpatrick leading the way and averaging 21 points a game this early in the season, are a serious contender in the Big East. Alabama could absolutely crush the Bearcats confidence because the game against the Crimson Tide will be Cincinnati’s first test of the season.
One thing to remember: The Crimson Tide are tired of being the best team in the SEC West and not the entire SEC year after year. This team wants to be recognized on a national scale.
