Maui Invitational: Butler Shocks Marquette at the Buzzer (Video)
Literally, they battled to the buzzer and it was Butler guard Rotnei Clarke who became the hero when it finally sounded.
The Golden Eagles controlled the second half with a slight edge in a game that was closely contested throughout. Butler trailed by one with under ten seconds to go, fouling Marquette guard Junior Cadougan to stop the clock. Cadougan made one of two at the line and then the Bulldogs got the ball into the hands of Clarke.
The 6-foot guard and one-time Arkansas transfer was virtually double teamed the entire trip down the court in the waning seconds, but Clarke found some room as the final second ticked off the clock.
The shot went through the net and Butler went forth into the Maui Invitational semifinals.
Take a look at the video here:
Clarke finished the game with 20 points, but needed 21 shots in order to do so. Of those 21 shots, none were bigger than the final one which fell through the net and put the Bulldogs into the winner’s side of the bracket.
Butler forward Khyle Marshall finished the game with a team-high 24 points, scoring countless baskets that kept the Bulldogs in contention throughout the second half.
