Morehead State head coach, Sean Woods, will face a one game suspension for his sideline behavior during their game against Kentucky.
Point guard, Devon Atkinson fouled out of the game with 5:51 left, which triggered Woods’ tantrum. He screamed at Atkinson, followed by a shove in the back towards the bench.
Woods has earned a reputation as an intense coach that yells at his players a lot, but this crossed the line. The physical push from the coach caught the attention of fans, the other coaches and all of the sports headlines.
The first year head coach will miss the next game against Norfolk State as his punishment. He acknowledged that he was wrong and apologized for his behavior. This is a step in the right direction.
As a first year head coach, this is not the way to start off. Because of all the spotlight put on this incident, Woods has no choice but to change his behavior and not let his anger get the best of him.
Woods was hired as the head coach at Morehead State to create a positive environment and produce a winning team. He needs to channel his energy and intensity in more of a positive manner in order to gain the respect of his team.
Woods’ behavior definitely needed to be addressed and the single game suspension is a sufficient punishment to teach him a lesson. Hopefully this will be the step in the right direction for Woods to tone it down on the sidelines.
