This week, the Colonial Athletic Association has named Delaware Blue Hens junior guard Devon Saddler and Georgia State Panthers freshman guard R.J. Hunter Conference Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week respectively.
Both Saddler and Hunter put on dazzling performances in early season tournaments against big-time opponents.
Saddler averaged 28.3 points while shooting 53.3 percent from the field and 87.5 percent from the line last week, top help the Blue Hens compete against Kansas State in the NIT Season Tip-Off and against Pittsburgh and Temple in tough non-conference battles. On the season, Saddler is currently leading the CAA in scoring at 22.2 points per game.
After struggling during his first two collegiate contests, Hunter has really found a groove in the Panthers’ backcourt. Last week, as the Panthers went 3-0 in the Coaches vs Cancer Classic, Hunter starred under his father and head coach, Ron Hunter along side Devonta White and Markus Crider. R.J. averaged 15.3 points and 4.7 rebounds the sub-regional competition, including a career-high 25 points in a 75-73 win over South Alabama.
As both teams are now working towards playing into mid-season form before conference play opens in a few weeks, both Saddler and Hunter will be relied on heavily to help their respective clubs to victory. Saddler has been preparing for this season over the past two seasons in Delaware, but Hunter has been thrown into the fire immediately. It will be interesting to see how both guards can continue their success and contributions throughout the remainder of the season.
