Richmond Escapes With Home Victory Against Wake Forest
In a game that was decided by two points when it was all said in done, the Richmond Spiders got a scare from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons tonight at home in a 62-60 victory. When looking at the box score and all the statistics it looks like Wake Forest should of won this game but somehow the Spiders prevailed.
On offense, the Spiders shot terribly from the field and the three point line. From the field, they shot 38.1 percent and from the three point line they shot 3o percent. Those types of numbers will not be acceptable when they start conference play. What kept them in the game was their free throw shooting. The Spiders would attempt 28 free throws and make 24 of them.
What also gave the Spiders their extra lift to win the game was their junior forward Derrick Williams. Williams who only averages 13.0 points per game this season doubled that in this evening’s game with 26 points and 10 rebounds.
If the Spiders can get a double-double on a nightly consistent basis from Williams then they just might be in good shape for rest of the season. All of the Spiders’ wins this season have been at home as they have an overall record of 6-2 and a 6-0 home record.
Many would call this a good tournament resume win for the Spiders, it is because the Demon Deacons play in the ACC but Wake Forest does not have any quality wins this season. Instead, Wake Forest only has wins versus lower ranked opponents.
