Are the Indiana Hoosiers the Best Undefeated Team?

Many teams have gotten off to great starts in the 2012-13 college basketball season, but none better than the 10 teams that will be listed in this article. Forget all of the one or more loss teams because this is an article for all of the undefeated teams.

Unless if you have been completely absent from a TV or the internet, you would know that the Duke Blue Devils are off to an amazing start. The Indiana Hoosiers are off to a pretty good start themselves, but who is the better team?

The Kentucky Wildcats entered the season as the defending national champs, but they look far from it this year, already losing three games on the season. Keep in mind that that Kentucky only lost two games all of last season.

As for the Wildcats’ SEC rival Florida Gators, they have gotten off to a very hot start and look like the best team in the conference. The last time Billy Donovan’s team looked this good the Gators won a national title.

The Big Ten Conference seems to be a three team race, with both the Michigan Wolverines and Indiana undefeated, but the Ohio State Buckeyes look as good as ever, despite their loss to Duke.

There are still a good amount of undefeated teams left in college basketball, but anyone could expect that this early in the season.

Let’s take a look at these undefeated teams a little closer, with the power rankings of the top 10 undefeated teams.

2 of 11

10. Illinois Fighting Illini

Record: 8-0

The Illinois Fighting Illini look good enough to be a contender in the Big 10, but it does have three very good teams in its conference this year. It will be interesting to see if this team can keep up with Indiana, Ohio State and Michigan.

The Fighting Illini’s best win of the season came against the Butler Bulldogs. However, we will really see how good this team is when they take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Missouri Tigers.

9. Cincinnati Bearcats

Record: 7-0

The Cincinnati Bearcats are off to a great start and they just received one of their best wins of the season so far, by beating a very good Alabama Crimson Tide team. In fact, Alabama was undefeated coming into this matchup.

The Bearcats also beat the Oregon Ducks who only have one loss on the season.

Junior Sean Kilpatrick is leading this team with 21 points per game, but the rest of the team isn’t doing too shabby because Cincinnati is the sixth highest scoring team in the nation.

8. New Mexico Lobos

Record: 8-0

The New Mexico Lobos are off to a really hot start, however, they barely escaped in overtime against the Indiana State Sycamores in their last game.

The Lobos best win on the season came against the Connecticut Huskies, but wins against the Davidson Wildcats and George Mason Patriots don’t look so bad themselves.

5 of 11

7. Gonzaga Bulldogs

Record: 8-0

When are the Gonzaga Bulldogs not good? Gonzaga always seems to put together an NCAA tournament team and this year will be no different.

The Bulldogs are very rounded this year with six players averaging nine or more points per game. As a result, Gonzaga is a very high-scoring team with the best field goal percentage in the nation at 54.2 percent.

6 of 11

6. Arizona Wildcats

Record: 5-0

The Arizona Wildcats have the talent to go on a Final Four run, but they haven’t had the toughest schedule in the world yet. Arizona’s best win came against the Long Beach State 49ers.

Mark Lyons and Solomon Hill are off to great starts, putting up 14 points per game each. This team relies on a well-balanced attack, but these two players have to be great all season long if the Wildcats plan on making some noise.

7 of 11

5. Syracuse Orange

Record: 5-0

James Southerland is off to a monster season for the Syracuse Orange, averaging 19.2 points per game. Southerland just got done dropping 35 points on the Arkansas Razorbacks, which was his best game of the season yet.

Syracuse may not be the team it was last year, but it is still very good and an opening season victory against the San Diego State Aztecs proves this.

8 of 11

4. Florida Gators

Record: 6-0

Florida looks absolutely amazing this year. The Gators have now blown out the Wisconsin Badgers and the Marquette Golden Eagles.

Kenny Boynton and Patric Young got a lot of the buzz coming into the season, but Florida has a lot of depth outside of these two players.

Senior Mike Rosario is stepping up his game and there are seven Gators scoring seven or more points per game.

The best part about this Florida team is the fact that it is playing just as good of defense as it is offense.

9 of 11

3. Michigan Wolverines

Record: 7-0

As expected, the Michigan Wolverines are doing their thing and Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr. are playing great basketball.

However, freshmen Glenn Robinson III and Nik Stauskas are exceeding expectations and will help take the pressure off of Michigan’s two stars all season long.

The Wolverines best win of the season came against the North Carolina State Wolfpack at home.

10 of 11

2. Indiana Hoosiers

Record: 8-0

The Hoosiers are clearly a great team, but they are not the best team in basketball right now. Sure, wins against the Georgetown Hoyas and North Carolina Tar Heels were pretty impressive, but those wins have nothing on the No. 1 team on this list.

Cody Zeller and the rest of this Indiana team is scoring at a very high rate, being the fourth highest scoring team in the nation.

11 of 11

1. Duke Blue Devils

Record: 8-0

This should come at no surprise to anyone. Duke has now beat three teams that made the Final Four last season. This includes Kentucky, Louisville Cardinals and Ohio State. Can someone say bring on the Kansas Jayhawks? Kansas is the only team that made the Final Four in 2012 that Duke has not beat yet this season.

The Blue Devils have also beaten the VCU Rams and Minnesota Gophers.

Seth Curry is having a great season, but Mason Plumlee is doing wonders for the team, leading in points and rebounds.

No other team has even close to the amount of quality wins that Duke has this season. Tell me another team that has beaten three top five teams this season and then we will talk.
