In the beginning of the season, the Atlantic Coast Conference was supposed to be “top heavy”. It was supposed to be a conference with 3 really good teams at the top and everyone else not being so good.
A couple of weeks into the season, we now know that isn’t the case.
Duke is in a league of their own atop the conference, but everyone else seems to create a very balanced conference. North Carolina State and North Carolina who were supposed to be in that “top heavy” group, have not impressed anyone in the beginning of the season and both have multiple losses already.
On the other hand, there are a couple of teams in the ACC who are playing better than expected.
Miami struggled early in the season, but recently got their star, Durand Scott back and he has led them to a couple of victories including a big win over Michigan State. Miami can make a case to be the second best team in the ACC surprisingly.
Virginia Tech is also another surprise team in the conference. The Hokies shocked everyone when they beat a very good Iowa team earlier in the week and then were able to follow it up by upsetting No. 15 Oklahoma State. Erick Green is leading the way for Virginia Tech and if he keeps up his play, watch out for the Hokies.
Virginia pulled off the biggest surprise of the week when they knocked off an extremely good Wisconsin team. Virginia, with the victory, proved they can hang with the top teams and will definitely not be overlooked in ACC play.
Maryland has looked like they will be able to compete and so has Clemson. Florida State started the season ranked No. 24, but has lost to South Alabama and Mercer so far this season. Despite a couple of bad losses, you can’t sleep on this FSU team.
The ACC will be a lot more competitive this season than most expected as many teams have proved they can play with the big boys early in the season.
