On Tuesday night, six Colonial Athletic Association teams were in action and only two teams didn’t disappoint. As the Northeastern Huskies dropped a home battle vs. UMass, Old Dominion fell to Richmond on their home floor, Hofstra lost to the visiting Wagner and Drexel came up empty on the road at Tennessee State, the Delaware Blue Hens and George Mason Patriots were able to secure victories in their respective home games.
In Newark, Del., the Blue Hens controlled the visiting Radford Highlanders all night in their home opener en route to a 68-59 victory. For Delaware, Devon Saddler and Jamelle Hagins keep leading the charge for the Blue Hens. But the biggest story in this one was the clutch play from two of the blue and yellow’s role players, Kyle Anderson and Carl Baptiste. Both lesser-known players contributed solid performances late in the second half.
Mason defeated the UMBC Retrievers 74-63, securing their undefeated three-game streak at home. In this contest, Sherrod Wright has continued leading this team offensively. Wright looks like a definite candidate for CAA Player of the Week.
It’s no coincidence that these two teams were able to manage victories on Tuesday while their conference foes were not. Both Delaware and George Mason look to be the early favorites for the conference title come springtime, with Northeastern and William & Mary looking to be the next top contenders. With only three more weeks left until complete conference play begins, maybe the Blue Hens and Patriots will be able to continue building momentum within their respective programs.
