Utah State’s Danny Berger in Stable, Yet Critical Condition Following Collapse at Practice
News surfaced on Tuesday evening that Utah State junior wing Danny Berger had been rushed to a local hospital following a collapse during an Aggies’ practice.
According to the report, Berger stopped breathing following the collapse, but was revived on the court before being flown to the hospital. The school issued a statement on Tuesday night saying that Berger is stable, yet remains in critical condition.
Utah State, who sits at 4-1 to begin the season, was scheduled to play BYU on Wednesday, but the universities have already made plans to postpone the game amid Berger’s current situation.
Here is part of the statement and press release issued by the university on Tuesday evening:
Utah State men’s basketball student-athlete Danny Berger had a serious medical situation during practice Tuesday afternoon and was transported to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.
Berger was tended to on the court by the USU Athletic Training staff, CPR was performed and the AED was used on him until ambulance personnel arrived. Berger is currently in stable, but critical condition. Tests and evaluations are ongoing, and further information will be released when available.
In five games this season, Berger had been averaging 22.2 minutes per game. He was fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 7.6 points per contest, in addition to 3.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists.
Utah State’s lone loss on the season came at the hands of Saint Mary’s back on Nov. 15 and expectations of a run within the WAC this season are certainly on the horizon.
For now however, the Aggies’ program remains focused on Berger’s health and hopeful recovery. There is no official word on any rescheduling of the team’s contest against BYU.
