Iowa takes on Iowa State Friday night, in what will be an interesting, fun rivalry game.  It has been rare for these programs to both be of high quality and competitive at the same time, and it should result in an entertaining game.  These teams have been down until the last couple of years, but both programs are pretty good this year.

Iowa, although I don’t think they will make the NCAA Tournament, has some talented pieces in Roy Devyn Marble and Aaron White.  Fran McCafferey is building up his Hawkeye program, with a solid freshman class, including big time recruit Adam Woodbury and Mike Gesell.

Meanwhile, over at Iowa State Fred Hoiberg has a very promising program as well.  They won a game in the NCAA Tournament last season before losing to eventual champion Kentucky.  Although, the Cyclones lost Royce White to the NBA they still have talent and experience.  Their big addition is Michigan State transfer Corey Lucious, a senior point guard.  Lucious is a steady, talented point guard who has Final Four experience.  This is a team full of veterans, who will not beat themselves.

The rivalry aspect in this matchup should be even more highlighted, now that both teams are good.  It might not be MichiganOhio State, but Iowa- Iowa State has some fire between the two teams.

Hoiberg, on the subject of the rivalry, stated, ““I grew up with this series…So, yeah, it’s a big game.”

Obviously, all rivalries are better when both teams are good.  So, there is a lot of extra pressure on both teams heading in to Friday’s game, to make a statement.  It should be a fun game, as the winner gets not only a nice resume building win, but also some major bragging rights in a big rivalry.
