Rick Majerus Honors Mount as Family and Friends Prepare for Memorial Service
As friends and family mourn the loss of Rick Majerus with a memorial services tomorrow and a funeral on Saturday, the impact he had on every team he coached during his 25-year career is evident by the honors that keep rolling in.
The beloved Majerus passed away last Saturday at the age of 64.
The funeral for Majerus is scheduled for Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in Milwaukee. Saint Louis will hold a public memorial service for Majerus Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Chaifetz Pavilion.
The Marquette Golden Eagles basketball team announced it will honor Majerus by wearing a special patch on the squad’s uniforms the remainder of the season.
A Wisconsin native, Majerus was an assistant at Marquette for 12 years before taking over as head coach. Majerus will also be recognized with a moment of silence prior to the national anthem at Saturday’s Marquette-Wisconsin game.
Utah honored the former coach at Wednesday’s game against Boise State and announced it would hang a replica of Majerus’ trademark white sweater from the rafters of the basketball arena.
In a statement issued by Utah, Athletics Director Chris Hill said “Rick left a lasting legacy at the University of Utah, not only for his incredible success and the national prominence he brought to our basketball program, but also for the tremendous impact he made on the young men who were fortunate enough to play on his teams. His standard of excellence extended beyond the basketball court and into the academic and personal success of his players. He will be deeply missed and we grieve for his family and all of his friends.”
Even at Ball State, where Majerus coached from just 1987-1989, the coach’s influence lingers.
“He will always be remembered by the Ball State community for his tenure with the Cardinals,” said Ball State director of athletics Bill Scholl. “He made a positive impact on the city of Muncie, the student-athletes at Ball State and Cardinals’ athletics.”
