Top 10 Undefeated Teams in College Basketball

Duke
Kevin Jairaj-USA Today Sports

Going undefeated in college basketball is almost an impossible task for any team. It has been done before, but is an extremely rare feat. Less then 10 games into the college basketball season, only 15 out of over 300 teams remain undefeated. There will be at most 14 after today as there is a battle of undefeated teams to take place tonight.

Some teams, who are undefeated, haven’t played a difficult team yet and that is the sole reason they are still without a loss. On the other hand, there are a few undefeated teams who have played a difficult schedule early in the season. These select few teams are the ones who are atop the AP poll.

9 of the 15 undefeated teams are members of a power conference, making the task to pull off an undefeated season almost impossible. Every undefeated team has to survive a couple of scares and also has to get “lucky” on a couple occasions. It is almost impossible to go out and play your best game every single game of the season. If teams were able to do that, there would be an undefeated team every single college basketball season.

As the season lives on, you always pull for that one undefeated to make it to the finish without a loss. It’s a great accomplishment that every single team strides for. With only 15 teams who can still list an undefeated season as a season goal.

I have broken down the 16 undefeated teams and narrowed them down to a top 10 based on how good they have looked in the season and who they have beaten so far.

10: New Mexico

New Mexico has started off the season 8-0 and is looking to continue their hot start. The Lobos are ranked No. 18 in the AP poll and are looking to climb the rankings. The Lobos loan win over a quality opponent came against at the time, No. 21 ranked Connecticut. UNM is led by 3 double digit scorers; Kendall Williams, Tony Snell, and Alex Kirk. New Mexico will have to deal with a tough conference schedule as they look to win out having to face both San Diego State and UNLV twice. UNM will also have to face No. 11 and undefeated Cincinnati in non conference play.

9: Illinois

Illinois has also started the season by defeating their first 9 opponents. The No. 13 ranked Illini are a team that relies heavily on the 3-point shot. They shoot a lot of 3’s, but at the same time they also make a lot of 3’s and everyone on their team can shoot from the outside. As a team they are shooting 40% from behind the arc. The Illini are led by 4 double digit scorers, but mainly Brandon Paul. One of the best early games on the season is on tonight as the battle two undefeated teams takes place. Illinois heads to Spokane to take on the undefeated Gonzaga Bulldogs in their first true test of the season

8: Cincinnati

Cincinnati has started off the season 7-0 behind their two stars, Cashmere Wright and Sean Kilpatrick. Kilpatrick is one of the best players in the nation and averages just under 20 points a game for the No. 10 scoring team in the country. The Bearcats have survived a couple of scares early in the season, but have done what they needed to, to win. The Bearcats will have to play the always difficult Big East Conference schedule, but will look to use scoring and rebounding to their advantage, as they look to continue their success.

7: Arizona

Arizona has started off the new season with a nice and easy 6 wins. The Wildcats have only played one road game and have not played a quality team yet. Arizona is ranked No. 8 in the country for a reason even though they haven’t beat a quality team yet. Nick Johnson, Solomon Hill, and Mark Lyons are three superb players who lead the Wildcats. Arizona will face No. 6 ranked and undefeated Florida next Saturday in which we will learn a lot about this talented Wildcat team.

6: Gonzaga

Gonzaga is currently ranked No. 10 in the polls, but I feel that they are better than their ranking. The Bulldogs are 9-0 heading into tonights marquee matchup with Illinois. Gonzaga leads the nation in field goal percentage, is No. 9 in the nation is points scored, No. 19 in assists, and No. 26 in rebounds. These numbers just show how good and balanced this Gonzaga team is. They are a team I feel can contend for a national championship.

5: Florida

The Florida Gators are off the what looks like another great college basketball season. Florida has been a top team for the last couple of years and are off to an undefeated start this season. The No. 6 ranked Gators are led by a versatile Kenny Boyton along with Erik Murphy and Patric Young. Florida has blown out Wisconsin, Florida State, and Marquette already in the season. Their next tough match is next Saturday at Arizona, where we will see which team is the real deal before conference play starts.

4: Syracuse

As the Syracuse Orange continue to win games this season, Jim Boeheim gets closer to his 900th win as a college basketball coach. The No. 4 ranked Orange have won their first 8 games this season as teams still have not found the answer for the famous 2-3 zone. Syracuse is in the top 25 in the nation when it comes to points scored, rebounds, and assists averaged in a game. Syracuse’s only win over a ranked opponent came in their first game against San Diego State. Syracuse had 4 players averaging double digit points, but Michael Carter-Williams does it all for the Orange and has been their most effective player this season.

3: Michigan

Trey Burke has got the Michigan Wolverines off to an undefeated start this season. Michigan has a couple of impressive wins so far this season and has proven they aren’t a fluke top 5 team. The Wolverines have beat the talented North Carolina State Wolfpack and a very good Pittsburgh team so far. Nik Stauskas is shooting over 60% from behind the arc so far and is a player you can’t leave open. The trio of Burke, Stauskas, and Tim Hardaway Jr. is a trio you don’t want to have to face.

2: Indiana

Debby Wong-USA Today Sports

Indiana is ranked No. 1 in the AP poll, but I don’t feel that they are the best team in the country. They are the best scoring team in the country and also a very good rebounding and passing team. The Hoosiers are led by Cody Zeller, the preseason player of the year. Indiana previously demolished North Carolina and that is their best win. They also beat a very good Georgetown team in overtime. Those two wins don’t make me to confident that they are the best team in the country, but they are a team who is extremely good. They can light it up from behind the arc and can also get out and run the court. Tom Crean has himself a legitimate title contender this season.

1: Duke

Duke
Kevin Jairaj-USA Today Sports

Duke has been the most impressive team so far this season. They also have the best player in college basketball this season in Mason Plumlee. The Blue Devils are undefeated and with that have beaten 3 top 5 teams. Ohio State, Louisville, and Kentucky are all victims of Duke victories. They also defeated previously unbeaten Temple today for their ninth win. Plumlee and Seth Curry are the leaders of the talented Blue Devil squad. Duke almost looks unbeatable so far and right now they seem like the only team that has the talent to finish off the season without a loss.
