With another week of Colonial Athletic Association non-conference basketball in the books, it’s time to hand out some awards. Just like every week in the conference, the CAA awarded their weekly Player and Rookie of the Week awards Monday.
First, after two outstanding road performances, in which he led his team to a tough and impressive win over Vermont and a remarkably close loss to his former school, No. 15 Georgetown, Towson forward Jerrelle Benimon was awarded the first of this week’s co-Player of the Week awards. During his two contests, the big man averaged 20 points, 13 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks per game. Most notably, Benimon led the Tigers past the Catamounts to secure their first road win of the season as he scored a career-high 29 points. Since transferring from GTown, Benimon has been a powerhouse and workhorse for head coach Pat Skerry and looks to be an early season candidate for the conference Player of the Year award.
Sharing the Player of the Week honors with Benimon is George Mason guard Sherrod Wright. In his two games this week, Wright scored 21.5 points per game while securing 5 rebounds and snagging 2 steals per contest as well. Being the best player on the best team in the CAA isn’t a bad place to be, and Wright is thriving in that role. As the focal point of the Patriots lineup, he’s living up to all of the preseason hype surrounding him.
Lastly, the Rookie of the Week was award to James Madison guard Andre Nation for his great efforts this week. As he averaged 9.5 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, the Dukes were able to secure a much-needed win over East Tennessee and just fall short of beating Richmond in overtime.
