Are the Florida Gators the Team to Beat in the SEC?

florida
Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

Can anyone catch the Florida Gators? The Gators look like one of the best teams in the country, let alone in the SEC. Not a whole lot has happened in the SEC lately, but that does not mean that the power rankings haven’t changed in week five because they look much different from last week’s rankings

The Kentucky Wildcats have gotten back on track with a couple of wins in a row. These victories may have not come to the toughest opponents in the world, but the Wildcats will welcome every win with opening arms after a very though start to the season.

There are just two undefeated teams left in the conference and that is, of course, Florida and the LSU Tigers. LSU has gotten off to a very surprising 6-0 start, while other teams in the SEC continue to fall.

After starting the season off at 6-0, the Alabama Crimson Tide have dropped their past two games. The Ole Miss Rebels also lost their first game of the season just recently.

With conference play just around the corner, Florida can really set the tone for the conference with a big victory over the Arizona Wildcats this week. This matchup will be between two teams in the top 10.

The Tennessee Volunteers can give their fans an early Christmas present by beating the No. 23 Wichita State Shockers. The Shockers may be undefeated, but they will have their hands full against a very good Volunteers team on the road.

Without further ado, let’s get into the rankings for the Week 5 SEC Power Rankings.

14. Georgia Bulldogs

Record: 2-6

After close losses to the Indiana Hoosiers and UCLA Bruins in the Legends Classic, I tried to convince myself that the Georgia Bulldogs where really better than they were, but the convincing is over.

The Bulldogs have lost back-to-back games and have the worst record in the SEC.

13. Mississippi State Bulldogs

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 3-5

Another Bulldogs team in the SEC that isn’t very good. Sorry Mississippi State fans, but it is going to be a long year for your team.

Luckily for this team though is the fact that it has a very easy out-of-conference schedule the rest of the way, so maybe the Bulldogs can rack up a few wins before it enters conference play.

12. Auburn Tigers

John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 3-5

The Auburn Tigers got their third win of the season in a blowout against the Grambling State Tigers this week. The only thing is that Grambling State has not won a single game this year, so this victory doesn’t necessarily help Auburn’s cause, but they will still take the W.

5 of 15

11. Vanderbilt Commodores

vanderbilt
Frank Victores-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 3-4

The Vanderbilt Commodores got a huge win on the road in their last game against the Xavier Musketeers. The game took overtime for the Commodores to come up on top, but it earned them their biggest victory of the season so far.

6 of 15

10. South Carolina Gamecocks

south carolina
Jeff Blake-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 6-3

The South Carolina Gamecocks really aren’t that bad of a team, they just aren’t anywhere near to being the best team in the SEC. However, with Frank Martin at the helm, you would imagine that this team would pull of a few upsets this season.

7 of 15

9. Arkansas Razorbacks

arkansas
Beth Hall-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 4-4

As expected, the Arkansas Razorbacks lost to the Michigan Wolverines. However, they did only manage to lose by 13 points. The Razorbacks have played some very good competition this year, which explains why their record isn’t the greatest in the world.

8 of 15

8. LSU Tigers

lsu
Crystal Logiudice-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 6-0

Like I stated earlier in the article, the LSU Tigers are just one of two teams in the SEC with a perfect record. However, unlike Florida, LSU has played some very easy teams this year.

We will get a better sense of how good the Tigers can really be this year when they actually play a tough opponent. If the Tigers can beat the Boise State Broncos and Marquette Golden Eagles, then I along with many other people will be convinced.

9 of 15

7. Tennessee Volunteers

tennessee
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 4-3

The Volunteers will bounce up the rankings once again if they can beat the Shockers of Wichita State. However, Tennessee will need a balanced attack to pull off this upset. Wichita State has been a relevant team in college basketball for a couple of years now.

10 of 15

6. Texas A&M Aggies

aggies
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 7-1

The Texas A&M Aggies may just be contenders this year in the SEC, but they have had a very easy out-of-conference schedule so far, like a lot of the teams in this conference. Whether the case, this team is starting the year off on fire.

11 of 15

5. Ole Miss Rebels

rebels
Spruce Derden-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 6-1

The Ole Miss Rebels were handed their first loss of the season against a very good Middle Tennessee team. Florida blew this team out earlier in the year, but Ole Miss did have to play Middle Tennessee on the road, whereas the Gators played in Gainesville.

The Rebels will likely get back on track and will be counting down the days before it opens up conference play against Tennessee on Jan. 9.

12 of 15

4. Alabama Crimson Tide

alabama
Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 6-2

Alabama can get a statement win with a victory over the VCU Rams. Just like most Shaka Smart teams, this year’s Rams are very dangerous and can take on any team in the country. To make matters even worse for the Crimson Tide, this game will be played on the road.

13 of 15

3. Kentucky Wildcats

kentucky
Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 6-3

Isn’t it odd seeing the Wildcats not ranked under John Calipari? Well, that is because it has never happened before under him. Kentucky has just two games before the showdown between the Louisville Cardinals. Ranked or not, that will be one of the best games of the season.

14 of 15

2. Missouri Tigers

missouri
Dak Dillon-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 8-1

The Missouri Tigers are starting to look like one of the best teams in college basketball, but they will have a tough test when they take on the No. 10 Illinois Fighting Illini on Dec. 22.

Of course after that game, the Tigers will have to take on the UCLA Bruins. Time to see if this Missouri team can be as good as it was last season.

1. Florida Gators

florida
Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

Record: 7-0

The Florida Gators may have been blowing out some very good teams, but they will have their toughest test of the season yet against Arizona this weekend. Luckily for Florida, college basketball has not seen a Gators team this good since they won the national championship in back-to-back years.

Florida is for real this year and it has plenty of talented players on its team to prove it.
