Jabari Parker is one of the biggest recruits in the college basketball class of 2013. Currently ranked 2nd by Rivals, Parker announced his college decision on Thursday. The battle between Florida, Duke and Michigan State was great but Duke won out in the end. Although this may seem like the right move, I don’t like how it will play out in the long run.
This is not a knock on Parker at all. He is exactly what you want out of a forward these days and he should be able to have a very successful basketball career. Personally, I believe he would be better off playing at MSU under Tom Izzo. He would stand a better chance of being the featured guy down there instead of out on the East Coast. His talents would have been better served battling with the post players of the Big 10 instead of the ACC.
A lot of people had Parker pegged for staying somewhat close to home. His parents want to see his games in person and it is a lot easier to do that in East Lansing than it is in Durham. That may not have weighed heavily on his mind but it would have been nice to see him do that.
However, the decision is probably going to be fine. Parker is going to be an absolute stud. His college choice does not really matter in the long run, except to those die-hard fans that inhabit college basketball. It would have been nice to see a Midwest boy stay close to home, but you can’t have everything.
I do think this means we need to get a MSU-Duke game on the schedule when Parker debuts. Make it happen, schedule makers.
