Christmas night brought a college basketball matchup for fans that were looking for something to watch as the third-ranked Arizona Wildcats edged out a win over the 17th-ranked San Diego State Aztecs 68-67 at the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii. Arizona stayed undefeated with the win and looks like a team that has the potential to make a national championship run. Arizona is off to their best start in 25 years with the 12-0 start.
The interesting thing about the Wildcats is while being undefeated heading into Pac-12 Conference play in January may seem great, the level of competition that Arizona has played isn’t the greatest. Besides San Diego State, the team’s only other Top 25 win was over the then-No. 5 Florida Gators by one point. I’m thinking that there are some losses along the way somewhere but I can’t figure out where though. The Pac-12 isn’t exactly the best conference right now with Arizona being the only team in the conference that is ranked right now. If Arizona keeps winning though, they will obviously stay near the top of the rankings but will the Pac-12 schedule help them come NCAA Tournament time?
The wins over teams like San Diego State and Florida do help but I think this could end up being a team that gets knocked out of the tournament early on by the third round. There is not one stud player who is averaging 20 or 25 points a game but three points averaging around 14 a game. While that is great for now, that might not be enough when times get rough in March when teams tend to lean on one player.
